I ''m 69 Years Old And I Remember Buying This Album Back In 1971. I had Been A Tull Fan Since Their" Stand Up" Album.
And When I Saw "Benefit" Was For Sale Reissued, I Jumped At The Chance To Get It Again. But Low And Behold My
Favorite Song On The Whole Album Was Not Even There. The Name Of The Song Was ''Teacher" And Replaced With
"Alive And Well And Living In" Which Wasn''t Even On The Original Album. I Feel Ripped Off. Now This Is The Vinyl
Album I Got. The CD May Have "Teacher" On It I Don''t Know. I Would Ask For A Refund If It Wasn''t So Much Trouble. I Love Jethro Tull And Always Will. I Did Get A Used Copy At A Second Hand Store But As With Most
Used Records, It Was A Little Scratched. This Is Not Good. The Next Time I Will Check The Song Play List Before Ordering. Hope This Helps Tull Fans.

I saw Tull live in 1973 with Gentle Giant. The best progressive rock concert I ever saw. They played Thick as a Brick and some songs from Aqualung. I listened to Tull through the 70''s until they began to bore me by the latter part of the decade. Since then I have purchased many of their cds and still find Benefit to be one of their best albums equalled by aqualung and thick as a brick. Tull made other interesting and good music but those 3 albums are their best. Benefit was just an earth shattering musical experience when released in 1970 and to this day there is still nothing close to it except perhaps aqualung and thick as a brick. People who are only familiar with aqualung or thick as a brick will be astounded by the music on benefit. It marks the beginning of Tull''s most creative era 1970-1973. Any music lover will find this landmark album pure bliss. A great combination of english folk music with progressive rock nuance. A great album and the remastering captures most of the original release''s sound. A must have cd for any audiophile.

this is ranked among Jethro Tull''s finest by many. The Steve Wilson remaster was well done. The 40th Anniversary edition I think had too many versions of 17 though. I think they should have only picked the finest 2 versions and canned the rest. I do love the song 17 but I don''t think we needed to hear 5 versions of it. The song Inside is still timeless to this day. The album had a consistency not yet achieved on Stand Up and a higher level of maturity on the song writing. And the beauty of it is it was the 1st time the band involved a session keyboard player John Evans who later became a full time member. I could never understand why the Stand Up Elevated Edition included the entire Carnegie Hall concert even though much of the material was from the Benefit album so it seems that concert should have been highlighted on this album, not Stand Up.

I own the original Vinyl LP of this recording in very good condition. It has several great songs on it; Teacher, Son, To Cry You a Song, etc... But the recording quality of the LP is poor at best. It''s hard to appreciate the the song writing talent and musical skill of the band, when the mix is as bad as it is on this LP. But Steven Wilson''s remaster solves this issue. It''s a thing of art and beauty again. The album now rolls down the aural pallet like a warm Scotch with a feisty finish and swift kick to the gullet. This is Jethro Tull in their fiery hey-day and at their angry every-man best in both lyric and melody! If you love Tull but not this album, get this remix. If you love this album, get this remix. If you don''t love Tull or this album, drink more Scotch until you feel the burn in your belly, and then get this remix.

After entering college in the mid ''70s, heard so many new rock groups and sounds but perhaps no more so than Jethro Tull. Tried to fit in, BS my way into a clique but "fell flat on my face." (didn''t even have one of their LPs!)
Anyway, over the years, have come to respect much of the music they produced. CD, their third album, remastered is quite good. Fidelity excels in vocals (midrange). Other times, there are variances; "play in time" and "Sessity; you''re a woman" are awesome but on other tracks, there is lack of pronounced bass, depth, some immediacy and realism.
Still, a renewed walk down memory lane. Recommended.

This review is for the EU made LP ( Vinyl Import from Germany ).

This re-mix is a job well done by Steven Wilson. The clarity, depth, and balance does wonderful things for this great JT album. Benefit has always been my favorite Tull record and this allows this often forgotten classic to Stand Up ( no pun intended ) and be counted amongst the earlier recordings. The vinyl and pressing quality on this import version betters the US release, along with the added Benefit ( pun intended ) of being a DMM ( Direct Metal Mastering ) stamping. I have a number of DMM re-issues, most are very good, a few - not so much. This is a well executed production all the way around. And for the record ( my last pun - I promise ! ), I purchased this from Hot Shot Records of Germany, ( a Amazon merchant ), and the customer service was outstanding.

If your a fan of this Jethro Tull album, get your hands on this fabulous re-issue.

Jethro Tull''s third studio album Benefit is a record that I have always struggled to get into. Back when I was a teenager, I found this album in my mother''s record collection and I remember it making me feel a little strange. As a kid I was use to a lot of things in rock music, but a flute? Well nearly twenty years later and my opinion for the most part has not changed. Whilst I find Benefit to be a worthy successor to the excellent Stand Up, I find the music to be a little samey and not eccentric enough to keep my attention, unlike Aqualung or Heavy Horses for example. That does not mean that Benefit is a bad album however. In terms of song writing, you can tell that Ian Anderson and friends had matured a little since the previous record. Their lyrics and over all song writing is a lot more interesting, almost teetering on what would become their trademark style. In terms of sound, it is a damn sight better than Stand Up. The production is a lot more solid providing Jethro Tull with a nice thick sound, a huge improvement on the more raw ''60s based sound on the previous record. This is easily the band''s first well mixed album. Benefit has a lot of heavy guitar work on the album. Martin Barre really churns out some great riffs and solos through out the record, not taking away his skill with an acoustic guitar of course. The guitar playing for the most part feels a lot more prominent then the trademark flute. There is also a lot less of the jazz influences that was present on Stand Up and This Was. Despite my lack of interest in the album. I do feel that it makes a great sequel to its predecessor. They could almost be considered a double album, they lean on each other very well and I would definitely recommend listening to them back to back. Despite the fact that I feel like the band dipped into the same well one too many times with tracks like Nothing To Say, Son and A Time For Everything being fairly typical Jethro Tull songs. The album is still an enjoyable listen as a whole and a fine addition to a prog fans collection.

Benefit seems to divide Tull fans and it''s been interesting reading the (very) extensive liner notes supplied in this Steve Wilson remix single cd package - it seems that the musicians themselves are likewise divided as the look back on the album and reminisce! As for me, I''ve always liked Benefit (so I guess I''m a little less than objective here) and hearing it again I still think the songs hang together ''as a whole'' really well - and the bonus tracks on here really do add to the listening from beginning to end (the only way to listen to an album, surely?!) for a really enjoyable 60 minutes audio experience. S. Wilson describes how he tried to keep the sound of the album but uses the advantages of the remastering process to allow ''detail'' to come through - and I think he''d achieved that on here but that''s not to say that this is an audiophile demonstration cd because it''s not - but he''s done good work here nevertheless. My only ''gripe'' about this particular package is that there''s no lyrics! Why not - especially when the rest of the booklet is so comprehensive? Recommend you buy it while it''s at such a low price on Amazon at the moment.

I bought this CD to get a remastered version of ''Teacher'' only to discover that on this CD its a bonus track of the Original UK mix. Other than ''To cry you a song'' I''d not heard any of these tracks before I was pleasantly surprised to find I liked the majority of them. The tracks are also very clear and sharp until you get to ''Teacher'' which isn''t bad, it''s just noticeably less clear and sharp than the re-mastered tracks. The booklet of sleeve notes also forms the CD cover image so you have to remove the whole thing to read it, though it''s not likely to be needed more than once.

I''ve listened for the first time to JT when I was 16, "Aqualung" was the first album I was exposed to, and I thought it was a spectacular album. Later I also bought other albums like "Thick as a brick", "Songs from the wood", "Minstrel in the gallery", "Heavy horses", "Living in the past" and other minor ones. It was only a few years ago when I bought a used copy of "Stand up" and "Benefit" on vinyl. This is an album that is probably not as easy as others, but in the end it slowly became my favourite, beating my previous favourite "Aqualung". The CD version is great, but I think the bonus tracks are partly staining the album that was ending with "Sossity...": if you listen to the bonus tracks after the rest of the album it''s clear that they don''t belong there. I don''t know all JT albums, but I would be surprised if I can find another one better than this.

Early Tull. Old but gold.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 4, 2020
As a reborn vinyl nut and a Tull fan of long standing, this was a great way to fill in a gap in my Tull archive. I didn''t really discover them until the early eighties when I became a student. As this record shows however, any incarnation of the band is well worth a listen.
